No More Homework !?!
Apr 4, 2008
Has homework reached critical mass in Toronto?
Families across the greater Toronto Area will be on the edge of their seats in the upcoming weeks as they wait to hear whether or not Toronto District School Board trustees will make the groundbreaking decision to ban or restrict homework.
The fact that homework could be on the legislative chopping block at all is not that much of a surprise. Homework has been a thorn in the collective sides of parents for some time now as the sheer amount of homework that children face each night has been wrecking havoc in otherwise happy households.
Kids are stressed by the volume of homework they face every night, and parents aren’t too happy about it either.
Homework amounts seem to increase in direct relation to teacher cutbacks and classroom sizes. School boards are expected to do more with fewer resources and classroom sizes are rapidly expanding giving teachers less time to teach materials during class, which means that in order to meet grade standards, more and more homework is assigned to the student. Unable to teach the curriculum in class, teachers send it home as homework. Now legislators want to eliminate homework entirely.
Something’s gotta give.
No single set amount of time for homework will work either because kids still need some measure of individualized attention. They still need to learn how to prioritize tasks, how to be organized, and how to make sense of the work that they’ve been assigned.
How do you feel about the potential homework ban?

A homework "ban" seems too harsh. My understanding of homework—at least in the lower grades—is that it is mostly made up of assignments not completed in class. If we were to see homework banned, what would happen to all the half-finished classroom assignments that surely would build up? Teachers would be losing valuable instruction time to allow children to complete work that could have been done at home. I am not sure if a "ban" is the answer. I think it would be in the Toronto District School Board's interests to explore a few alternatives, such as reducing the amount sent home, or ensuring that parents understand what is sent home so they can offer help and encouragement. Of course another great alternative would be to check out Oxford Learning, where children are taught to study smart, and make the most of their time.

I agree .Homework puts my kid under wwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much stress.
Amy - Apr 13, 2008
I think it is a terrible idea. As a teacher, I know how much material we must cover in the course of the year, and due to interruptions such as snow days, fire drills, field trips, sports games etc, the reality is, we lose a lot of time with our students. Some teachers give way too much homework, but I think homework is an important skill for students to learn. What will happen when they go through school being babied and only doing 2 hours of homework or less per night (in high school), then they get to University and are hit with 4 hours of readings plus essays and assignments? These kids are going to be lost. I think a homework ban will only hinder their development.

I believe that having homework is an integral part of our right to be educated. Homework should enhance and reinforce what is being learned in the classroom. Parents should not be burdened with having to teach their children what should be taught in the schools, and the children should not be self-taught, using homework as the tool to do so. Well-planned homework and projects are necessary to prepare students for university, as well as to instill a good work ethic that will take them through their lifelong learning challenges.

i totally agree

I'm depressed and part of the reason is homework.

Sarah - Apr 17, 2008
My daughter has a learning disability that requires her to take a longer time to finish her in class work. This means in addition to regular homework, she has to complete class work which sometimes adds up to hours for a grade three. It becomes totally frustrating for her at times. I believe that emphasis should be put on the quality of homework done, not on the quantity.
Alex - Apr 21, 2008
Banning homework is not a good idea. My daughter went from a private school that handed out extensive homework to public school--that gives out practically none at all and she suffered greatly because of it. Too much free time is not good for kids. The only reason people want to ban homework is because parents don't want to spend time with their children helping them do it.
Jack Rodden Education center - Apr 21, 2008
i would agree to ban homework, kids need to be able to play, laugh and just have fun. They dont always need to be doing homework.
Personally i don't think theres a point of getting 2-3 hours of homework, that just creates stress and if kid in high school get stressed enough it might lead to suicide.
We need the goverment to really consider these comments.

Jane - Apr 22, 2008
Simply to play the devil's advocate, I'd point out to Mr. Rodden that some might say that children receiving little or no structure during after-school hours are more likely to turn to things such as drugs, promiscuity, and crime to fill their time. I might also suggest that likening homework to suicide is a bit harsh. As I suggested above, a happy medium needs to be found. Banning homework is a bad idea for the reasons listed above. Teachers have so little time to work with the students as it is. It would be irresponsible to expect them to spend their little precious time completing homework. I believe it is just as irresponsible to send the students home at 2:45 or 3:00 with absolutely nothing to do. Homework provides structure, breeds self-disclipline, and prepares students for college, university, ot the workforce. Let's find the middle ground! A place where children are receiving enough homework and where they can still also be children.
Jane - Apr 22, 2008
As a side note to Mr. Rodden,
I looked your center up online, and didn't find anything. I was intrested in reading your philosophy. Does your center have a website?

I believe my daughter who is in French public school grade 4 recieves to much homework and does get totaly stressed out about it. I also believe that we should get back to basic in the class room and spend more time on reading, writing and math. Never mind the field trips. I'd rather take care of that... I don't think there should be a total band but I believe that homework should be a revision of what was tought in class and not an extension of what was not accomplised.
Danielle - Apr 23, 2008
This is to Jane
You teachers make me laugh...Do you realy believe that children are home by 3:00 with nothing to do?? My 10 year old is on the school bus at 7:30am and doesn't get picked by me untill 5:00 or 5:30PM. As soon as we are home she starts her homework while we make dinner. So about an of homework. After dinner she finishes what she couldn't about another 1 hour 1/2 on good days. My heart break to see tears rolling down her cheeks when she is tired and frustrated and my husband who is anal about homework won't dismiss her till she finishes. If that's not stress I don't know what is?? Most people are not teachers we don't finish work at 3:00. I am not happy at all that it is going to cost me an arm and a leg to get her a tutor because basics have been cut out......
Jane - Apr 24, 2008
Danielle,
I was primarily referring to the early dismissal times of high school students or students that are old enough to be left without supervision until their parent(s) gets home from work. I empathize with your situation, however, if you carefully read my previous posts, you will see that I support a reduction in homework amounts. I just do not agree with doing away with it altogether. I also made a point of suggesting that schools provide education for parents regarding homework, so that they can help and encourage their children, and help them finish quickly. Again, please note that I empathize with your situation, and feel badly that your child gets frustrated. I have suggested finding a middle ground where homework (an important time management exercise and pratise tool) does not interfere with a child's right to be a child.
As a final note, I feel that you should know that I am not a teacher, and agree with you regarding your problem with teachers not teaching the basics anymore.
Tare - Apr 25, 2008
Not only does homework give children a chance to work independently away from a classroom setting, I think homework is an important tool in communication. I think it keeps interested parents current with what their children are learning at school and gives us a glimpse of how they are managing the subject areas.
I find that teachers are cutting back homework and I feel more disconnected from my children. When I visited the school for parent teacher night I was surprised to see the research subjects and sad to hear that one of my children wasn't organized or neat enough in his work. I feel like I have been eliminated as a part of their education team.
It has been said to me that math homework shouldn't be brought home because teachers don't want parents to help in troubled areas. Apparently the "new math" shouldn't be confused with old methods. Personally I wonder whether children should be limited in their approaches to solving problems. Our school offered a "Parent Math Night" several years ago and explained to us the new approaches and showed us how they were helpful to students. I thought that was a nice touch.
Krystyna - Apr 26, 2008
I do not think that homework is helpful at all.
First of all, the name “Homework” assumes that each child has a home that is safe enough to do their homework. It assumes that each child has the time to do homework – some children leave school and look after younger children or go to work to help support themselves or their family. By assigning homework in your class, you have set several of your students behind in their work – as a result they will act out simply to get sent to the office so that when homework checks come around they do not feel “stupid” or left out – acting out tends to have a strong connection to how prepared students feel compared to their peers – if they do not feel as “smart” as their classmates they will act out as a way to compensate for this.
Most will argue that homework is needed to ensure that students are not up to “no good” once the school bell rings – however there are far more beneficial programs that are available for children that help with their development – both socially and personally (ie self esteem). Children are living in a fast paced world, where most are not given time to simply be children. The studies that show the importance of play far outweigh the studies (actually, I am not aware of any recent studies that show that homework is beneficial) that argue for homework.
Jonny - May 13, 2008
People please! homework is an important to the children's education and learning! Sure it may be over loaded, and this might be because of kids using up the class's time talking. So if your child comes in with a lot of homework, then his class most likely was messing around a lot of the class period. And Jane, I totally agree with you about this whole situation, and that it is important to review the children's class period, about what they were learning. It ideed does help kids to learn the subject, and to get a better understanding of what they are learning! So I would say that it is important to keep kids with homework, to be able to go throughout their years of learning with skill, and an abillity to do so . . . Keep Homework!!!

I'm in grade 8 and beleive that homework is a waste of time. Teachers do not provide enough time in class to do our class work and we should be able to have more than recess and lunch to hang out with our friends. The home work causes stress and argumants at home and I think Jack Rodden is completly right

My mother-in-law who was a teacher and administrator for 23 years completely doesn't believe in homework. She says that children today have way too much on their plates with activities after school such as mucic, dance, hockey, swimming lessons, etc. These activities are also important and as long as they read for about 45 minutes each night, that should be enough. I agree with her. Homework makes me cringe! They don't want to do it, they don't like it and sometimes I don't understand it. It just makes everyone miserable. I'd much rather be having fun with my kids, than stressed about homework. Here's to no homework!

I can really understand how people get streesed out about homework -- I do myself. However, it seems strange to say things like "its the teacher's job." I think that the teachers are responsible for getting information across to our kids, but the truth is -- they are OUR kids. So, if the children are in need of more time to learn things, we should not be complaining about helping them. Who should care more about a child's education... the teacher or the parent?

To be honest I am quite surprised to see such a big debate about whether or not we should have homework for the children and youth of today to complete. I agree that today's children must deal with concerns that many of us in the past were not presented with, but what opportunities lie ahead for our youth if they cannot keep up with the demands, as adults, in our society today??? Education is a foundation of success. Homework is not something invented to bother students or cut into their friend and family time. Homework is to help the student learn skills such as patience, concentration, and most of all the ability to THINK for themself. Video games and hanging out with friends will not help a student succeed in the reality we call LIFE.
Maryn - Sep 4, 2008
I'm in Middle School and the teachers DO give us a lot of homework. But homework isn't so bad. It helps me with the work that we did that day. Homework can be a stress for me, but it helps me at the end. It makes me think, "Oh, I am SO glad that the teacher gave us that homework." And besides, homework is not for making students miserable. Homework is for helping and learning things. Students can't always have fun and laugh. Life isn't that easy.
justina - Sep 4, 2008

Personally I think 4 hours of homework a night is atrocious. i dont get a paycheck from thr school board fo rdoing what a teacjer is paid to do, so yeah, away wiht the homework. I'm thinking that half of you seem to forget that that adding homewrok after isschool is like telling you adults to go home after work and do quite a few more hours of work. Do you not like to take a break? I know if I work a shift of over 5 hrs i get 2 15 min. breaks and also a lunnch break, my son doesnt get recess anymore and only a break for lunch, We are adults and we ourselves would be overloaded and stressed as well if we were expected to do this much work, so you think it's o.k. for KIDS to do it? And give me a break on the "parents don't want to spend the time doing the work with our kids" well you are right, as a single pareent I'd rather spend the time cooking a great homemade meal with my kids, or throwing the ball around or better yet, spend the time laughing and fooling around, relaxing, then be stressed out 18 hrs a day and living a heck of a shorter life, or by fighting with my child over the frustration of all the homework. Until I find a patcheque in my mailbox from the T.D.S.B. for all the "teachig I do on top of my parental duties by doing the teachers job then I say No Homework!!!
Kathy - Sep 4, 2008
So I'm guessing that those of you who think homewrok is the key to success live like robots and don't have many social skills either? As children, they also need a balance of education as well as a social life? guess you are also not up to date on the latest Pediatrics studies? You all know of what stress can do to an average say 30 year old? Can you imagine what it does to an 11 year old? And you think it's o.k for an 11 year old or younger to have an average of 2 - 3 hours of homework a night and not have the weekends off like most adults do? Give me a break
Regal - Sep 6, 2008
Banning homework is rather, well, stupid. Kids do -not- get all that much homework. They complain about the smallest amounts and bug their parents to do it. Which is where the parents get distraught.
The only problem is the major assignments they might get towards the end of school before more holiday breaks or semester ends. They just need to balance it out a bit and it'd be fine. Throughout the rest of the year, homework is not all that "mountainous."
Lighten the homework load. That's it. Ban homework, and congratulations, you be ushering in the "dumbest" generations we've had in a long time.
And yeah, I don't like homework either. I'd love to have none, but it's a necessary evil. 'Sides, there's always just "not doing the homework." Everybody is too hung up on marks anyway.

homework dosent need to be completely banned if at all the quantity decreased but not completely removed because it helps the students to keep in touch and renforces what has been taught in the classroom on that day.if a child was to pay attention in class and then come home and give it atleast 2 hours im sure it wont be a problem to do a bit of homework but yes the amount has to be decreased.

Yesterday I worked on homework for 5 hours straight. Not to mention dinner or reading. I get home at 2:30 and I go to bed at 9:00.

Get rid of homework!!!

I just did a survey for kids that want to keep homework or get rid of it and only 3 kids said we should keep it im sure over half of our school wants to get rid of it. Seriously why keep it when nobody wants it. Im sure some teachers would happy because they wouldnt be hereing kids groan and they wont have to pass out so many papers every day. Kids get really stressed out when they are forced to do hard homework then they dont like school! Im sure more kids would want to go to school if we could get rid of homework.

If a person wants to learn how to play a particular instrument, what do we think is the best way to learn? Would we not agree that the best way to master a skill is to practice? Do we not hold practices for basketball, baseball, hockey and other sports so as to master a skill? Why is it that no one thinks it is ridiculous to make people go to basketball practice 3 times a week, or piano lessons 3 times a week to refine or master a skill? Yet, Math homework 3 nights a week, to practice a skill, is considered to be ridiculous.

I am in 7th grade and i know that sometimes i get over-loaded on homework, but homework is completely essential for my classmates and me!! KEEP HOMEWORK!!
For the good of all of us... - Jan 15, 2009
Here is a little persuasive essay i wrote on why there should be little or no homework in school. NOT TO BE SHRUGGED OFF JUST BECAUSE I'M IN 7TH GRADE!!!
Homework Headaches
Have you spent hours deciding what homework your student’s do? Do you want to get off work so you can spend time with your family? Can you believe that that the average 7th grader gets an hour and ten minutes of homework a night! Way too much for a kid. Well, I think that there should be little or no homework in school.
The first reason why I think that there should be little or no homework is because I have stayed up until 10:00 pm doing homework and other kids even later. When a middle schooler stays up late doing homework it is VERY unhealthy. By the time the student gets to school he/she is groggy, tired, and can’t think straight. This interferes with his/her ability to learn. Another reason is that what if a student doesn’t do there homework? They won’t learn the subject! So all in class work would have the kids actually learn the subject instead of getting F’s. Also, when staying up late, the student has no time for friends, family, or physical exercise. This will cause them to become fatter while there hopes and dreams slowly leave there head. Is that what you want? Fat, lazy, sad kids? So you see little or no homework would be healthier for kids to!
For the good of all of us... cont. - Jan 15, 2009
Another reason is that no homework would help teachers to! I have seen my teacher, Ms. Jenson spend hours grading papers without a break. With little or no homework they could go home early and spend time with their family. Also, teachers would not have to nag students about missing work. While at the same time not be nagged by students for homework that hasn’t been inputted yet. A third example is that kids would get higher grades. This means that that there will be less parent teacher meetings about kids getting bad grades. So, as you can see having little or no homework would help out teachers to!
There could also be many problems with having little or no homework and I know that. It’s true that most teachers probably wouldn’t have enough time to squeeze everything into the schedule. To fix this, teachers could lecture less and answer any questions a student might have. Another problem people say is that kids would not understand what is being taught. An easy solution is to set up a classroom that students could go to after school if they don’t get the work. The final problem I’ve heard is that students wouldn’t learn to be responsible. Homework isn’t meant to teach kids responsibility, that’s what parents are for. Responsibility is a moral feature it’s the kids choice to be responsible or not, it can’t be taught through work but through the parents.
So, as you can see students and teachers would benefit from little or no homework. Students would be fitter and more alert while teachers would be happy with their families. You see, having little or no homework would be for the good of all of us not just the happiness of students. I highly encourage schools to consider this when writing up next years plans.

Emilia - Jan 23, 2009
Im an 11th grade student, I travel a lot and move to a lot of different schools I just left a school in toronto in the middle of the semester I saw the difference between schools in many different places in the world and i consider myself very lucky to have seen so much of the world and met so many kinds of people in my short life of 16 years
and when it comes to homework all it does is add stress
if you really want someone to learn or establish themselves its there choice
usually when kids are told to do something they wont listen right away
were kids
were learning
were dumb
we do make mistakes
we regret
but with homework on our minds along with all the drama we already have to deal with just makes us BLOW and yea school work may lead to suicide I have friends who themsleves have contemplated sucicde cuz its just too much to put up with
give us a break
for all the kids around the world
were tired of hearing all your complaints
our parents
our teachers
socitey as a whole
expects soo much from us !!
give us a break we are your tomorrow
that doesnt mean baby us or spoil us rotten just let us make our own mistakes and learn from them your job should merely be to warn us its our choice to listen
homework shouldnt exist teachers should do there jobs right and get work finished during class time and as for those students who fail to complete there class work it should be there choice they know the concequences of uncompllete work and in the end the only one who gets hurt is US the students so let US BE
some of the students dont even need to do homework we're just to smart haha jk but we already know the work well enough and who knows teens better than a teen herself?
so plz give us a break
lifes short
you dont know what tomorrow will bring
let us ceaze the moment and live the day
if we choose to plan for tomorrow yes we shall succed academically but the real winner is the one who succeds in life
honesltly ask yourself this
does homework help you become a better person ? or do the mistakes you've made in life teach you a more valuble lesson you wont ever forget?
"knowledge is power"
but remeber knowledge isnt always e=mc2 <3

im doing a speech on why there shouldnt be homework and this website is soooo helpful!
thx to the person who made it :)
Martin O'donovan - Jan 28, 2009
I think banning homework is a ridiculous idea. My students cannot possibly finish everything in class! We must keep up with our curriculum. Students should not have two much free time. I have seen students not taking homework seriously. I think 2-3 hours of homework is reasonable. To much free time can cause a student to fall behind. I will continue to hand out homework.
DJ_360 - Feb 2, 2009
I truly agree that homework should be banned! That is why i am writing a essay on it!
Erik - Feb 3, 2009
personally i agrre that homework is not a "good" thing, too much gets stressful, i thinj around an hour- one and a half hours is long enough and then study if you are in an exam year(3rd and 6th year in ireland). i however do not agree on TOTALY banning homework but drasticly reducing the amount, 4-5 hours excluding study is way too much especially if you get home at around 5-6 o'clock.
just my view,
a homework hater - Feb 9, 2009
OMG TOO MUCH MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kairi - Feb 11, 2009
i agree i hate homework i have a life and i want to talk to my friends instead of come home and do homework we go to school for 13 years (not including college) 10 months a year 5 days a week 7-8 hours a day! WAY TOO MUCH SCHOOL!!!
Totalkoolness - Feb 11, 2009
Yeah, homework...
i could say a lot but i shouldn't
these are a few reasons we shouldn't have homework:
wastes time
we go to school like every day!
we need time to ourselves
we all, well most of us have social lives
we don't care
it's scary...
i want to burn it
i miss out on fun stuff all the time
i don't get enough sleep
i don't like school as it is but then i gotta go home and do homework1
There are still thousands of other reasons too but i have to do homework right now...
DESTROY ALL HOMEWORK!!!!
I'm a 12 year old girl in 6th grade just making a point...
i hate homework - Feb 11, 2009
homework sucks
so do teachers!
burn all teachers and homework!
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
Patrick - Feb 12, 2009
I am 12 years old and in 7th grade. Each day I get about 1 1/2 to 3 hours of homework and practice musical instruments for about two hours. Sometimes I have to wake up at 5:00 to finish homework. Even with all this I don't feel stressed at all. A homework ban is just dumb. I know a lot of kids that already have way too much time that they waste.
Patrick - Feb 12, 2009
Oh and most homework is actually pretty fun. I like doing functions and writing book reports.
Patrick - Feb 12, 2009
It's funny how people say homework causes stress and leads to suicide. And then they say BURN IT!!! HOMEWORK IS SCARY!!!
Oh wait... good idea...
The Homework
Bob: Oh my gosh, run!
[Run behind trash can]
Joe: Is it gone?!?!
Bob: I think so!
[Joe feels something in his pocket and takes it out]
Joe: AHHH!!! HOMEWORK!!! NOOO!!!
Bob: Don't look at it!!!
Joe: My eyes!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Martin O'donovan - Feb 14, 2009
Homework is something we all have done and will continue doing it intill the end of time. Kids having to much free time is a bunch of malarky. I think friends can meet each other during recess time. How will they benefit on there education.

When does a seven year old child get to be 7 yrs old? At the age of 7, I went to school, came home, played with my friends, went inside for dinner and spent maybe 30 mins twice a week on homework. They were usually projects of some kind. Homework gradually increased as I got in the higher grades.
I played outside, unstructured with my friends, managed to stay away from drugs, alchol, promiscuity, and have no criminal record. I think I turned out pretty well. I got to be a kid when I was one, and learned to be an adult gradually as I got closer to adulthood.
I think there needs to be a happy medium, and homework should be distributed appropriately. I don't see why a child in JK should have homework EVERY night, but I certainly think a child in grade 8 should have homework to prepare them for what they will find in High School, and that high school students should be preparing for the homework they will receive in college/University.
emily - Mar 9, 2009

Every study ever made showed that homework does NOT help students learn.
It is stressful, and also one of the main causes of dicipline problems throughout the world.
Also, too much homework is coutner-productive.

Lucinda - Mar 24, 2009
What people have forgotten to mention is that nearly every kid doesn't do half their homework and when they do they use the internet...i learn nothing from homework at all some days i get 4 pieces a day and some teachers give you homework even when they are not meant to. I agree banning homework is not good but i think one a day is enough even if it's 5 a week is better than the 22 i'm getting now.
anonymous - Mar 24, 2009

A Teacher Who Cares - Apr 10, 2009
After reading many of these posts, I feel like many people think teachers are "out to get students" and ruin their lives and that we are not doing our jobs. I am a very good 8th grade history teacher--I love my students and make sure we do not just do boring worksheets everyday. Plus, I don't just go home at 3:00 and I have a child of my own as well. The simple fact of the matter is that we have very little time to teach and help our students. I get 50 minutes to teach everything I need for a day. After we've completed the learning part there usually is not a lot of time left for the practicing part and that is what homework is for. Practicing what you have just learned. Did you know it takes an average person 8-12 times of doing something before they can memorize it? I agree completely with the person in the beginning who said we need to find a balance. Kids do need to know how to manage and organize their time and work on their own or they will have a difficult time in college and with their job. Teachers should not give 5 hours of homework a night either. A little moderation can go a very long way. Oh and the purpose of being a kid is not to have fun. It is to gain the skills and knowledge in order to take care of yourself when you are an adult. A balnce of fun and hard work is what we need.
momo - Apr 13, 2009
its me again and i haaaaaate homework and it takes up to much time
Becca - Apr 14, 2009
Most days I get homework from at least 5 classes. Each of these assignments take 30 minutes-1 hour. Also I'm involved in multiple different after school activities. So most of the time I'm staying up unitl 10:30 to finish homework. I think a restricting the amount of homework would be better then banning it though.
Jake - Apr 15, 2009
Maybe just lighten up the homework. Not too much not too less. Don't Ban it just even it up a little more. Les projects
Taya - Apr 18, 2009
I think homework is useless because if you're one of the smarter kids, it's unneccesary and if you're struggling, it's useless.
JACKY - Apr 20, 2009
Homework can cause big trouble and u can also get in trouble if u dont do it
Hw is stupid and also no point of doing
u just learn it in school
Annie - Apr 26, 2009
Ok, so I don't live in Canada, but I also have a similar problem. 15 years old, 9th grader in High School.
Right now, it is 12:30 AM where I live. I have been doing homework all weekend and I am still not finished.
This weekend alone, I have had to:
-Read 4 chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird and write summaries.
-Define 3 sections of Biology vocab words.
-Make a timeline on the events of WW2
-Complete two LENGTHY Algebra 2 worksheets. (After I finished, I counted 17 pages worth of work I did. And I write fairly small.)
And to make matters worse, end of year finals start tomorrow morning. Common sense along with proven studies tell me that staying up this late the day before several MAJOR TESTS THAT WILL TELL ME IF I GO INTO THE NEXT GRADE. So, if I end up repeating 9th grade next year, I can thank the countless hours I have put into finishing extensive and (mostly) un-needed homework assignments.
*I am now going to bed, no matter how much work I have left. I guess I will have to wake up early!*

Lugia2453 - May 1, 2009
Thankfully, I don't get too much homework in the school I go to. Usually I'll get homework from 2 to 3 classes a day out of 7 classes, and it only takes about from 50 minutes to an hour and 10 minutes to complete on an average day. Then I have plenty of free time to do whatever I want to, and that's a good thing. I don't want homework to be banned totally, we should still have homework, just not a very high amount of it to the point where it stresses out children. Homework does actually help me a good amount in my Math class, and in my U.S. History one the homework gives me additional resources to study for my tests. Without homework, I would probably not do as well in those classes, and it shows that homework can actually be helpful in academic achievement when done correctly. Homework doesn't have to always be pages of work, either, in my Math class, for example, I usually get only 5-8 problems to do a day, but that is good enough to help me understand the work we did in class better.

Kids' don't have the freedom to play with their friends or to spend time with their friends. When kids' go on vacation with their families and they are away for almost the whole summer the kid's won't have time to do summer homework.
Doing homework after school is just a waste of time because you don't learn anything from homework you do all of the learning in school. When kids' get a lot of homework and it makes them struggle when they could be playing outside with their friends. I'm in 5 grade and my teacher gives really hard homework. i think homework should be banned.

Homework its just a big unnessasary repeat. Students love doing work when they want to, not when their forced to. I failed Algebra b/c i didnt do my homework, but i still got the work. we dont need homework. its unnesasary and just causes stress to the young children.

i don't think helping your kids with homework is necessarily quality time.
TOO MUCH homework is a nuisance and completely unnecessary.
also, why should kids and parents have to bear the burden of snow days/games/cutbacks etc?
what's the board of education's role if the only solution to the above problems is allowing teachers to hand out more homework?
Spiderman - Sep 13, 2009
Hey 'FAHIMA!!!', if you dont like it you didnt have to post, after the years of loyal service Ive shown to this world I still get told Im not allowed to post on a site about homework...this is ridiculous, your all on your own from now on.
And the bar mit zivah was for my friend Kohl.
Hannah - Sep 14, 2009
I think students shouldn't get homework.
As a highschool student myself
I know how much work we get DURING school and when we get home the pressure and stress of more homework.
I know all the teachers say that homework shouldn't take more than 2 hours tops or whatever but that is never the case,it usually takes at least 2 hours per subject on top of that we get essays and projects. All this homework is sucking up our valued childhood. Yeaah i know, education is our future, but what kind of future would we have if all the children are stressed and don't have time to spend with friends and sometimes even family. I know from experience, how many times i had to miss out on family outings because i had to finish up some homework.
JUST WATCH! ALL THE STUDENTS IN THE WORLD WILL BECOME SUPER SMART FROM ALL THIS HOMEWORK AND START BUILDING EVIL ROBOTS THAT WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH. THEN YOU WILL SEE WHAT A MENACE HOMEWORK IS! muahahahahahahhahahahahahaha.
