Just say no to homework

How much homework is too much?

For one Calgary family, the answer is any homework is too much homework. With two children—one in grade five, one in grade seven—the family was spending an “inordinate” amount of time doing what the father, Tom Milley, called busy work.

So they signed an what’s known as a differentiated homework plan with their school so that their children won’t have to do any more homework.

The reason? The assigned homework was preventing the children from focusing on their weak areas.

The children are graded only on their in-class work and still have after-school work such as studying, but the majority of their homework will focus on improving in their weak areas.

The homework issue isn’t new—the debate has been going on for years about the purpose and effectiveness of assigned homework.

The Milley family’s homework ban may even create new homework regulations in their area.

I read the plan for Differentiated Homework...there is nothing new there that I could see or read about, as I read through the 3 committed parties responsibilities. Homework is a three way street; children, parents and school, all working together as a team, getting the task done, helping each other as necessary, reviewing concepts, preparing for the next steps, etc.
Have I missed the point entirely? Or is the document just a recap of what happens in my wonderful school and not others?

Dudes- shut up about the friggin trees! It gets old! I think that we should have homework- but there should be a limit. I am only in 8th grade, and I have at least 3 hours of homework a day. Not complaining, but I want to be done all of my homework before it gets dark outside! o_0 <<< yeah, that face- EPIC FAILURE!!!!

Hey Erighn,

If you're in grade 8 and doing 3 hours of homework a night you must be MIA during school hours or don't have a life after school. Homework is a given but excess of it is only frustrating and a waste of time!
