Oxford Learning Student Becomes Gold Medal Athlete

July 14th, 2011 1 comment

Whether it’s big goals or small goals, once a goal is met, it’s something to celebrate.
Former Oxford Learning student Sara Albers had big goals—Olympic-sized goals in fact—and this month she reached them at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece!

As a student at Oxford Learning, Sara was always enthusiastic, positive, and motivated, qualities that carried over into her training for the long jump, 4 x100 relay, and the 200 m dash.  Her dedication paid off: Sara brought home a gold medal in the long jump, and a bronze medal in the 200 m dash!

15-year-old Sara is the youngest athlete chosen for team Canada, and everyone at Oxford Learning would like to congratulate her on her hard work, dedication, and success.

Helping students reach their goals—academic and otherwise—is the foundation of Oxford Learning.  Congratulations once again Sara on reaching your goals, and best wishes as you strive to meet your goals in the future.  Everyone at Oxford Learning is cheering for you!

Celebrating Teachers and Educators 2010

April 7th, 2010 No comments

Oxford Learning in the Beach has been celebrating the hard work and dedication of the educators in our community for 7 years. This year’s party, held on March 6th, was a great success! We had over 90 entries from our students, and had our largest attendance to date! Students were given the opportunity to read out their entries to their teachers to show their appreciation, and each teacher was given a special package for their participation. A silent auction was also held, and we managed to raise over $700 for Room To Read!

New Tutoring Centre Opens in York Mills

April 7th, 2010 No comments

Toronto, ON—Toronto’s newest Oxford Learning Centre will be opening in York Mills this week.

Oxford Learning provides quality after-school educational support for students of all ages and grades. Oxford Learning was founded in London, Ontario in 1984 by education experts who were developing an interactive program to help children learn how to learn.

Along with basic school skills such as reading and math, Oxford Learning helps students develop their confidence.

“Confidence is a big part of helping children get better grades,” says Sundip Makani Centre Director of Oxford Learning York Mills. “When children start to feel better about their learning abilities, they can accomplish anything. We’re really happy to be bringing these learning opportunities to the York Mills community.”

Each Oxford Learning program begins with an in depth assessment of a child’s learning strengths and weaknesses. This process allows students to be placed in a program where they will get academic support to best meet their learning needs. Students then work in small groups with teachers to develop their proficiency in math or reading, building their self-confidence as they work.

Grand Opening: Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Grand Opening: Saturday, April 10th, 2010. 11 am to 3 pm
Oxford Learning York Mills will be open in time for the spring rush

“This is the last push of the school year, so if there’s a time when students need extra support to improve marks before final report cards, this is it.“

York Mills residents are invited to check out Oxford Learning April 10th during the Grand Opening Celebration. The Hon. Judy Sgro, MP from York West will be on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 pm.

Tell Mosquitoes to Buzz Off with Buy-A-Net and Oxford Learning

July 30th, 2008 1 comment

Oxford Learning students are helping children in Uganda tell malaria-infected mosquitoes to buzz off by raising funds for BUY-A-NET, a charitable organization that supplies bed netting and medicines to families in Africa.

BUY-A-NET is a volunteer organization based in Kingston, Ontario, Canada that provides World Health Organization (WHO) approved mosquito nets to families in Uganda. For many children in Africa, the basic comforts of life are a luxury. Millions of families live in such extreme conditions of poverty that they are unable to purchase to a simple bed net to prevent to prevent infected insects from biting.

Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It kills an African child every 30 seconds. Those who don’t die form the illness can have lasting learning impairments. (WHO: Roll Back Malaria) Yet, Malaria is highly treatable and preventable.

Oxford Learning students have been raising funds for BUY-A-NET by participating in read-a-thons and other fundraisers such as art auctions.

So far Oxford Learning has provided the funds to purchase enough bedding nets to supply multiple villages!

If you would like to support BUY-A-NET with a donation, please visit BUY-A-NET’s website.
