Hello, my name is Josie and I am the Education Director here at Oxford Learning. I joined the Oxford Learning Team in 2010.
When I am not at Oxford Learning, I am spending time with my husband, our two awesome teenage sons and our sweet dog 'Dali'. We love to enjoy the outdoors, camping and traveling; usually exploring Alberta.
My philosophy of teaching is: 'If a child can not learn the way we teach, we must teach the way they learn!'
I have worked for the same school district for the last 31 years, working as a certified Educational Assistant and Librarian. I worked for Oxford Learning for 1.5 years and then took some time to teach French to parents and adult students. This past summer I rejoined the Oxford Learning team.
My hobbies are dancing, snowshoeing, reading, camping, sewing, knitting/crocheting, but most of all playing with my grandson.
My first language is French and I have two sons, one daughter, my grandson, two dogs and one cat.
I graduated with a degree in civil engineering a couple of years ago with the intention of pursuing a career as an engineer. I had a hard time finding a job right away and started tutoring privately while I was job hunting. I fell in love with it!
When I heard about Oxford Learning, I decided to stop by and check it out. I ended up getting a job! I love it here and am now thinking about going back to school to be a teacher.
When I'm not at Oxford Learning, I can be found volunteering in a high school classroom, playing and coaching rugby, or hanging out with my dog Pepper.
When I received the offer to join Oxford Learning, I saw an opportunity to give back.
Being that as a child I needed help in school, and the extra help that I received helped me to reach my academic goals.
I love skiing, biking, golfing, cooking and reading.
My philosophy is to, 'always find the positive in every situation!'
What Parents & Students Are Saying
I am having dinner with my daughter and we were talking about her reading, and she looked at me and said "guess what level I am on now mom" I guess nine. She said "no level 11!" She was beaming. I asked her how she felt about reading and she said "I feel so good. I feel smart, I feel confident. I like feeling smart."
I wanted to share a thank you with you and your team. One of the hardest things is to see your child struggle with school and be frustrated. I feel so overwhelmed to hear her tell me she is proud of herself and that she feels confident.
From us to you, thank you!
Have a great weekend.
Three of my children have attended Oxford Learning Centre, each benefiting from different aspects of the programs; organizational/study skills for one, confidence and remediation for another, and finally homework support for the third. The staff has always been helpful and friendly toward me and are well-liked by my children. I don't hesitate to recommend their services to others.
Beyond the progress made academically, we have seen unbelievable improvements in Bria’s selfconfidence and self esteem. I think that the biggest gain that Bria has made this year is how she handles the unexpected. Oxford Learning has provided a safe environment for Bria to further develop her coping skills for when things don’t go according to plan. Thank you so much for being such a positive influence on my daughter!
