Collingwood Teacher Awarded

Flora Manuel Memorial Award

We are so proud of our teacher Iona - the recipient of the 2025 Flora Manuel Memorial Award - one of only 2 teachers to receive this award across all 130+ Oxford Learning locations. Iona is a truly exceptional Reading Excellence teacher who embodies everything that makes our programs so special. With infinite patience, a wonderful sense of humour, and an extraordinary ability to turn every moment into a teachable one, she has a gift for making every student feel seen, valued, and celebrated. Kind, intuitive, and always smiling — no matter what the day brings — Iona is exactly the kind of teacher that Miss Flora herself would have been proud of. This award honours the legacy of Miss Flora — Oxford Learning's very first Little Readers® teacher, whose warmth, creativity, and dedication live on in the pictures that still adorn our booklets today. It is our great pleasure to recognize Iona as the 2025 recipient of the Flora Manuel Memorial Award — a truly worthy successor to that remarkable legacy.

Parent Nomination Letter for Iona:

I am writing to proudly nominate Iona for the Flora Manuel Memorial Award as one of Oxford Learning’s most outstanding and deserving “Reading Excellence” teachers.

As the parent of twin boys, Ira and Leo, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the extraordinary impact Iona has had on their academic growth and love of learning. When the boys began working with Iona in Grade 1, they were below grade level in reading and writing. At that time, they struggled to sound out words and were unable to spell independently, and we knew they needed additional support to help them succeed.

Through Iona’s expertise, patience, and individualized approach, the boys made remarkable progress. Now in Grade 2, they are reading and writing above grade level and are already learning Grade 3 material. While every child’s learning journey is unique, it is clear that Iona’s dedication and instructional excellence played a critical role in helping them achieve this success.

What truly sets Iona apart is her ability to go beyond academics. She has transformed the boys’ attitude toward learning by helping them build strong study habits, confidence, and perseverance—especially when learning felt challenging. She celebrates their achievements, encourages their efforts, and consistently empowers them to believe in themselves.

Iona is not only an exceptional educator but also a warm, friendly, and incredibly patient individual. She has built a genuine connection with Ira and Leo, taking the time to learn about them as individuals and making them feel valued and supported. The boys come home from every session excited to share what they’ve learned, proudly explaining strategies and tips Iona has given them to use at school.

Thanks to Iona, my children are confident readers, motivated learners, and proud of their accomplishments. As I have shared many times in person and through online reviews, we truly could not have achieved this without her.

Thank you for considering this nomination. Iona is truly deserving of this recognition.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,
M. Szigeti
Mom of Ira and Leo

Testimonials

There truly aren't enough stars to rate this service effectively! My daughter attended Oxford Learning to help with some areas that she was struggling in, and within hours of instruction, I saw an improvement in her confidence and ability to take on challenging material. She would literally bounce to the car each time I picked her up and always had a heartfelt story to tell me about how Adriane or Emily encouraged her and made her believe in herself and her ability to conquer challenging material! Not only did she have tremendous growth academically but her confidence in her ability to succeed has left me speechless. She is now conquering every subject independently with a 94% overall average. The confidence she gained at Oxford Learning has progressed into so many other areas of her life: they taught her that anything is achievable. I truly can't recommend them enough; their dedication and love for learning are evident in everything they touch! It's been years and my daughter still adores them and will forever carry the lessons they taught her. Investing in Oxford Learning was the best decision I ever made!

★★★★★
My child loves Oxford Learning! They offer a fun, supportive and small student-to-instructor ratio learning environment. Our child is in French Immersion studies at school and Oxford Learning provides the reinforcement and encouragement she needs which we cannot provide at home and isn’t available at her school. We continue with Oxford Learning programming through the summer months to keep things “top of mind” when September rolls around again also. Adriane and her team are great to work with.

My daughter attended this center between the ages of 10-14. She was well supported in a very positive environment. The staff was very knowledgeable, patient and friendly. She gained a lot of confidence in herself and her academics. We highly recommend Oxford Learning if your child needs extra support and guidance.

★★★★★
Our son was underperforming in school and was frustrated. That frustration led to issues at school leading to a spiral downward. Between covid in his early school years and moving, he struggled to keep up and was overwhelmed. The direct interaction and teaching at Oxford Learning helped him to close the gap with other students. He has gained the literacy skills needed to advance and the confidence to face new challenges with his next grade.

★★★★★
Oxford Learning is an excellent resource for parents with children who are feeling challenged with any learning in school. They focus on what your child needs individually, whether its studying, reading, writing, math and other subjects. It's not your usual tutoring, they go very in depth assessing their students and providing each individual with a strategy that helps them learn and understand what they are learning. My child has been attending for almost two years now, and we have seen leaps and bounds in his progress. He has become much more confident in his reading and writing.
